Foodie Friday: Neighborhood Nibbles–Part Two

Season’s Greetings! A Happy New Year to you all! If you read my last “Neighborhood Nibbles” post, you’ll know that recently, three good friends of mine (who also happen to be chefs) visited me in Nashville. They came into town for some NFL football, delicious food, and Southern hospitality. They were very clear about what they wanted “food-wise”: Simple, flavorful Southern-style foods.  And, of course, they also wanted to try any Nashville-specific specialties.

In part one of my post, I described our experiences at Peg Leg Porker and Party Fowl. Today, I’ll share some insights from the second day together and our inspiring visits to a couple of our other Nashville Gulch neighborhood haunts.

Let’s start with our Breakfast experience at Biscuit Love—home of the perennial line. What I mean by this is that, as you can see from the picture, there is an hour-long (or longer) line—stretching out the door and down the block—of hungry people waiting to experience items from BL’s famous “Born in the South” menu 7 days a week.

To their credit, the staff does a great job of crowd and queue control by engaging guests, answering questions, updating wait times, and handing out menus for those in waiting mode to peruse.

About 48 minutes after joining the throng outside the restaurant, we were inside enjoying our coffee and ordering food. We started off with a shared appetizer/dessert: a creation known as the Bonut. What are these oddly named breakfast treats, you ask? Bonuts are fried biscuit dough topped with lemon mascarpone and served over blueberry compote. They arrive at the table in orders of five. They also disappear in about 30 seconds. YUMMY!

Next, we went for the traditional biscuit-oriented fare—including the East Nasty, which features a deep-fried boneless chicken thigh, aged cheddar cheese and sausage gravy on a buttermilk biscuit. We also ordered a Southern Benny, which combines shaved country ham, two fried eggs, and sausage gravy on a buttermilk biscuit. Finally, they served up the Wash Park—made of two beef burger patties, pimento cheese, bacon jam, and a fried egg—on or alongside a buttermilk biscuit. Wow! Once we finished this feast, we were ready for a nap in advance of the football game.

We didn’t end up napping—but ended up in conversation about how we each thought the game would turn out—and then decided to walk to the game in time to enjoy the festive pre-game atmosphere at Nissan Stadium. After tailgating for an hour or so, we made our way to our seats and enjoyed the come-from-behind win by the Titans—which was good for me, but not for my guests—who were fans of the visiting team!

We finished the night where we started that morning—back in the Gulch area of Nashville. Our evening meal was at Stock and Barrel—a place known for “Burgers and Bourbon.” We had a great post-game conversation about football and life as we enjoyed some fabulous food, including hand-cut duck-fat fries, locally-sourced, pasture-raised beef burgers, and carefully curated beverages. What a great ending to a wonderful couple of days centered around friends, food, and of course…football!

And, of course, for something a little weird…

One prominent attraction in my Nashville neighborhood, The Gulch, is the array of large, elaborate murals painted on the sides of buildings. Like the patrons outside the door of Biscuit Love, there are often lines stretching down the block of tourists waiting to take photos of and with these local art masterpieces.
